Basketball has made its long awaited arrival across southwest Missouri and four of our local squads are playing in tournaments in what is essentially, tip-off week. Mt. Vernon, Aurora and Miller boys and girls will all be in action this week to open up their 2022-23 campaigns.

Mt. Vernon opened their 2022-23 season Tuesday night in Joplin as the Lady Mt’neers upset the Lady Eagles, 52-40. The Lady Mt’neers hit nine threes as a team, six from sophomore Cheyenne Bieber alone.

The 2022 volleyball run was another memorable season for volleyball within Lawrence County.
Aurora finished the season with a 9-16-2 record earning the top seed in the Class 3 District 12 tournament.

The Mt. Vernon Mt’neers were defeated by the Seneca Indians at Tom Hodge Field in Seneca on Friday, Nov. 11. The loss brought an end to the team’s 2022 season, in which they were the runners up in the district championship.

The Lady Mt’neers ended their 2022 volleyball campaign Tuesday night as the second-seeded Seneca Lady Indians defeated the Mt. Vernon squad in four sets, 3-1. The loss follows wins against Cassville in the opening round of district play, and top seed Aurora on Monday.
