It has been a tough season for the young Mt’neer baseball squad. They sit at 5-8 coming into the mid-season after a 3-1 start to the year. While youth may be a big issue for Mt. Vernon this year, they may have just had their best run despite going just 1-2 for the week.

The Lady Mt’neers have been on a roll winning 15 of their last 17 games, including an active nine-game win streak. They traveled to Adrian to take on some of the best the entire state has to offer. But first, they traveled to Sarcoxie (12-7) on Monday.

It was a big week for Mt. Vernon when it came to sending athletes to play at the next level. Seniors Faith Rycraft and Wyatt Cordray both signed their official letter of intent last week to participate collegiately.

The Lady Mt’neers have been on a roll this year and it has led to a No. 6 ranking in the most recent MHSFCA Softball Rankings. Mt. Vernon came into the week 15-4 with two winnable games on deck.

In the past seven years or so, there hasn’t been anyone better in Big 8 baseball than the trio of Aurora, Springfield Catholic and Hollister. Aurora got to take on the other two of the trio in the toughest week for the Houn’ Dawgs of the season.

Twelve schools from around the area converged on Honey Creek Golf Course in Aurora for the annual Houn’ Dawg Tournament, last week. Aurora finished second with a team score of 247 behind only El Dorado Springs who shot a 241.

Basketball season wrapped up about three weeks ago but several of the top stars we have come to know received some more of the top honors in the state. Miller’s Claudia Hadlock headlines the honors as she was selected to her third All-State team in Class 2.
