In a hard-fought game, the Mt. Vernon Mt’neers defeated the Springfield Catholic Fighting Irish, 26-18, to win the state championship quarterfinal game on Saturday, Nov. 17, in Mt’neer Stadium. The team now moves to the state championship semifinals.

Mt. Vernon squad defeats Cassville Wildcats, 34-14, to gain second consecutive title
The Mt. Vernon Mt’neers defeated the Cassville Wildcats on Friday, Nov. 9, 34-14, to become the Class 3, District 6 champions of 2018.

Three Mt. Vernon varsity volleyball athletes were recently named to Class 3 District 12 postseason teams, including first-team selection senior Ashlyn McCanless.
Joining McCanless were second-team selections sophomore Ellie Johnston and freshman Cameryn Cassity.

The Mt. Vernon girl’s varsity volleyball team entered the Class 3 District 12 volleyball tournament at Cassville as the top seed, followed by Seneca, Aurora and Reeds Spring. The Lady Mt’neers defeated Reeds Spring in the semifinals in three sets, 25-16, 25-27 and 25-22.

The Miller Cardinals football team defeated Marionville two weeks in a row, the second time, by the score of 35-6, as a first-round game in the district playoffs.

With the expansion of the Big 8 Conference from eight teams to 14, two divisions were created, an East and a West. At the conclusion of most sports, the two divisions are scheduled to match up with the same seed from the other division for a showdown contest.

Mt. Vernon's Lyndsey Hood finished the Class 1 State Doubles Tournament in 12th place overall, winning one of three matches. The state competition was held at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.
