Aurora’s Shelter Insurance pushes shop local with latest contest

Grant Baker’s Shelter Insurance in Aurora is holding a competition during which they are giving people a chance to win a $25 gift card to one of 12 local businesses each day.
The contest, called “The 12 Days of Christmas,” features a new riddle or puzzle which is posted each workday on the Grant Baker - Shelter Insurance Facebook page. The first person who likes the post and correctly answers the riddle wins the gift card being given away that day.
The gift cards are from these Aurora businesses: Ila Bohm’s, Red Roots Boutique, Las Palmas, Hog Tide Barbecue, L & M Athletics, Strike Zone, Glaze Craze, Big Dog Screen Printing, Down Home Mercantile, Garden Exchange, Perfect Images and Blackbird Bar & Grill. There is also a $50 Visa gift card which is the contest’s grand prize. The contest began on Monday, Nov. 30, and a $25 gift card will be given away each day through Tuesday, Dec. 15. The grand prize will be given away on Friday, Dec. 18.
There are some rules to the contest. The game is open to any person from anywhere, but there can only be one guess per day per Facebook account. Each person who plays is eligible to win only one gift card; however, even if you win a $25 gift card, you can still compete for the grand prize.
Grant Baker credits his affiliate agent, Shelby Rohlman, with creating the competition. He said that she is changing the time each puzzle is posted to the Facebook page to give as many people as possible a fighting chance to win.
Riddles, puzzles and trivia
There will also be different types of riddles or puzzles to answer. For example, on Monday, Nov. 30, two pictures of Santa Claus were posted on the Facebook page, and people were asked to find five differences between the two. The winner of that competition was Taylor Potter, who won the $25 gift card to Ila Bohm’s. Baker said Rohlman will vary the puzzles as the contest goes forward.
“She’s got some riddles,” he said. “She’s got a quote in a movie, if you can name that movie, or a song, like some short words from a verse of a song, (and you can name it).”
Baker said there was a two-fold reason for holding the competition. One was to encourage people to shop at Aurora businesses.
“(We want) to promote our local businesses and try to get people to get on Facebook, get the $25 gift card and then go buy something at our local businesses,” he said.
The other was to increase his own business’s visibility on Facebook.
“You want to get more people hitting your Facebook page with likes and stuff like that,” he said. “It seems that everybody, especially this year with COVID, the way you get out there now is social media, (because) so many people are working from home on computers; everything can be done over the computer.”
Baker added that the strategy has been very effective in reaching people.
“Our page likes are up 3,200-percent, first-engagements is up 317-percent, and the people we’ve reached, and this is in just the last week, is up 1,213-percent,” he said. “So, it’s doing what we wanted it do. It’s reaching people to get our name out there. Maybe we can write some insurance business.”
