Applesauce Chocolate Cookies

The Record’s “Recipe of the Week”:
Applesauce Chocolate Cookies by Jenni Moffatt

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup applesauce
2-1/4 cups flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 375°. Cream together the shortening and sugar. Add the egg and applesauce. Mix well.

Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and cloves. Add to the creamed mixture. Stir in the chocolate chips.

Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden.

NOTE: An original family recipe that my grandmother designed to satisfy those who couldn’t have much sugar. The applesauce replaces a lot of the sugar and the shortening helps to keep the cookies moist a little longer than regular chocolate chip cookies.
