Despite a tough season up to this point, Aurora finally claimed a marquee win this season to the detriment of their arch rivals, the Mt. Vernon Mt'neers, 71-54.
Mt. Vernon struggled to match up with the size and the length of the Houn' Dawgs, as Aurora built an early lead that the smaller Mt’neers squad struggled to defend. Aurora's senior trio of Hayze Hoffman, Trandan Darnall and Daunte Floyd had a tremendous game, as the Dawgs rolled to their second win in a row over Mt. Vernon after snapping a five-game skid last year, 71-54.
“The Mt. Vernon-Aurora rivalry is what high school sports is all about. It is such a fun experience for all students and student athletes. Mt. Vernon has some really good young players and like any rivalry game, you have to ignore records,” Aurora coach Adam Thornhill said.
Mt. Vernon moves to 5-11 on the year but have a pair of winnable games this week as they were scheduled to host Reeds Spring on Tuesday before traveling to 2-10 Clever on Friday.
Aurora improves to 4-13 on the year, but 4-3 in their last seven games. Things will not get much easier for the Dawgs as they travel to Willard on Wednesday, before traveling to 14-3 juggernaut Rogersville on Thursday.
