Basketball has made its long awaited arrival across southwest Missouri and four of our local squads are playing in tournaments in what is essentially, tip-off week. Mt. Vernon, Aurora and Miller boys and girls will all be in action this week to open up their 2022-23 campaigns.

Aurora
Aurora girls will not participate in a tournament this week but will still be in action as the Lady Houn’s will look to build off their 54-29 win over Hartville last week, as they will travel to Southwest on Tuesday. The Aurora boys tipped off their season Monday with a 77-59 loss against Fair Grove in the Clever Tournament. Senior Trandan Darnall led the Houn’ Dawgs in their loss with 14 points. They will be back in action Friday against Purdy, at 4 p.m., in the consolation semifinals.

Miller
Miller boys opened up their year Monday in the Marionville Tournament, against recent powerhouse Greenwood. The Cardinals looked to avenge the 2021 sectional loss behind a huge game from future NBA bound Aminu Mohammed. They were unable to get the job done though, as the Cardinals struggled with the athleticism of the Bluejays and fell 61-28. They will take on the loser of RUSH homeschool and Stockton on Thursday in the consolation bracket.
The girls received the second seed and took on Sarcoxie in the opening round of the Gem City classic in Diamond, Tuesday night. They will play in the in the semifinal round Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against either College Heights or McAuley.

Mt. Vernon
Mt. Vernon girls will continue to participate in the Carl Junction Classic, which they opened with a loss Monday against Springdale Arkansas, 54-37. Sophomore Cheyenne Bieber led the way with 16 points. Sophomore Addie Hall led the way on Tuesday night scoring 19 points in a loss to Neosho, 66-38. The girls will conclude the tournament Thursday against Seneca. The Mt. Vernon boys will be in Diamond for the Gem City Classic where they won their opening round game against Sarcoxie, 40-30, Monday night. The win will move the Mt’neers into the winner’s bracket where they will take on El Dorado Springs, Wednesday at 6 p.m.
