Carol Sue (Backerman) Smythia

Carol Sue (Backerman) Smythia, 66, passed away at her home in Verona, Nov. 23, 2018. Smythia was born Nov. 22, 1952, in Joplin to Herman Eugene and June (Davis) Backerman, Sr.  She graduated from Jasper High School with the class of 1971.
Smythia was a home health provider for Integrity Home Healthcare, a member of the Carthage VFW and a member of the Assembly of God in Miller. She loved Facebook, and everyone knew her as Aunt Carol, Mom and Mama Carol.
She was married to Frank Smythia in 1994 at the Assembly of God in Miller; he preceded her in death in 1998.
Smythia is survived by: sons, Herbert (Tashia) Garner of Verona and Marty J. Garner (Teresa) of  Springfield; daughter, Rebecca (Christopher) Mason of Greenville, N.C.; brothers, Gene (Becky) Backerman of Lamar and Jimmy (Pamela) Backerman of Joplin; sisters, Judy (Wally) Norton of Lamar, Linda (Ed) Cook of Liberal and Judy Silkwood of Braymer; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and a host of family. She was preceded in death by brothers, Gary, Fred and Steve Simmons and one sister, Druceilla Simmons.
Visitation and service were held Nov. 27, 2018 at Ulmer Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to help cover funeral costs.
