David Abraham Stephens

David Abraham Stephens, passed away Jan. 5, 2019 surrounded by his family. He was born June 22, 1955, in Springfield to William H. and Evelyn (Scott) Stephens.
In 1983, he married Debra Williams Baker and to this union three children were born, William (Tiffany), Charles, and Marie Stephens. In 2000, he married Jeanne Montgomery Sawyer and gained two more children Blake (Lauren) Sawyer and Alyssa (Josh) Ludwig. He has left behind many close friends, including his best friend since childhood, Terry Hoggard; He was the eldest sibling of Mark (Monica) Stephens, John (Kathleen) Stephens, and Elizabeth Kingsley.
Stephens was extremely passionate about learning and educating others. He graduated from Augusta High School in Augusta, Kan., in 1973. He attended Central Bible College from 1973-1977 and later continued his education at MSU in 1983, and earned his master’s degree in educational administration in 2005.
Stephens began his teaching career at Green Valley State School for the severely handicapped where he taught from 1982-1992. He taught special education at Logan-Rogersville High School from 1992-1996. He began teaching special education at Aurora High School in 1996. During his tenure at Aurora he was very involved in leadership, serving tirelessly on the welfare committee for many years. He retired in 2015 but continued to substitute in the Aurora school district and then returned to a part-time position in Aurora this school year.
He was always willing to share his knowledge with other educators and to assist them in any way possible. In his earlier years of teaching David was very involved with Special Olympics, at one time serving as an Area 6 Missouri Special Olympics Board member.
Services under the direction of the Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home in Aurora were held Jan. 11, 2019, at the Aurora High School. Memorials may be made to A Sporting Chance at P.O.
