Fire at Brad’s kills chicks; building saved by sprinklers

On Wednesday, Feb. 26, a small fire broke out at Brad’s True Value in Mt. Vernon. The fire started a little before 6 a.m. when a heat lamp fell inside a chick enclosure and set the bedding on fire, triggering the sprinkler system.
The sprinklers ran for about 25 minutes and caused extensive water damage, but also saved the building, reports the store’s management. About 50 chicks were lost due to the fire. The value of items lost due to smoke and water damage is still unknown.
