Hay trailer behind Brad’s True Value ignites on July 4 evening

A trailer storing hay behind, and owned by, Brad’s True Value caught fire the evening of July 4. Although the source of the blaze is undetermined, witnesses said they saw kids shooting off fireworks nearby, according to Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Brad DeLay.
“We’re guessing fireworks,” DeLay said of the source. “This actually started last night about 10 o’clock, we got the first call. We came back here and it was fully engulfed in flames. … This morning we were basically doing a cleanup, some of the outside refueled a little bit so we’re wetting it down. We’re going to assume whether accidentally or on purpose, fireworks got into it an set it on fire.”
A back hoe was eventually brought in to drag out some of the remaining straw on the trailer. (Photo by Ryan Squibb)
