Just in time for Christmas, the Mt. Vernon Police Department held their first Shop with a Cop event Friday, Dec. 20. Shop with a Cop is conducted with the goal of building a positive relationship between youth and law enforcement. This year, Mt. Vernon Police Department had a total of six officers partner with three children for a fun-filled shopping experience.
Each child was given a budget of $200 to spend. They each got at least one pair of winter shoes, house shoes and toys of their choosing. Officer Allen Campbell was the main coordinator of the project with the help of other members of the department. The children were selected through the school and the event was funded through donations from local businesses along with individual donations. Each child was overwhelmed with excitement as they selected exactly what they wanted for Christmas. The officers commented that the highlight of the night was watching their faces light up.
Plans are already in the works to host another Shop with a Cop event next year with hopes of reaching out to more families. Donations for Shop with a Cop may be made at Mt. Vernon City Hall 319 E Dallas St. Mt. Vernon Mo. 65712.
