James Gilbert Compton

James Gilbert Compton, 97, of Mt. Vernon, passed away Sept. 24, 2019, at the Lawrence County Manor in Mt. Vernon. He was born Aug. 12, 1922, in Lawrence County, the son of Jasper Allen and Golden Belva (Parnell) Compton.
Compton was a 1941 graduate of Miller High School, in Miller and attended Draughon’s Business College, in Springfield. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and was a customer service manager for the Carnation Corporation in California. Compton was a member of the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, the Lawrence County Reading Room and the Mt. Vernon Golf Course for 35 plus years. He was a volunteer at the Missouri Rehabilitation Center, the Missouri Veterans Clinic, the Hope Center and the St. Susanne’s Food Panty. In 1949, he married Virginia Berniece Shook, in Johnstown, Colo. She preceded him in death in 2007.
Compton is survived by: his daughter, Mary (Mike) Craver of Mt. Vernon; one grandson; one granddaughter;  and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Jasper and Golden; brother, Lemuel Compton; and sister, Ina Lee Garrison Marsh.
A graveside service, under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, was held Sept. 28, 2019, at the Pennsboro Cemetery in Pennsboro.
