Lady Mt’neers drop lone game of week to Cassville/ Mt. Vernon boys basketball split opening week

Mt. Vernon sophomore Cheyenne Bieber goes up for a layup over Cassville’s Kyler Hayward early in the first quarter. Bieber was a key cog in the quick start scoring five of the game’s first eight points.

Mt. Vernon's Lady Mt'neers were looking to end a three-game losing streak but fell to the visiting Cassville Wildcats, 44-38.
Although Mt. Vernon led 21-19 at halftime, they relinquished the lead. After Cassville tied the game on the opening possession of the second half, it was all Lady Wildcats as they went on a 10-4 run to take a 31-25 lead late in the third quarter. The Lady Mt’neer offense continued to sputter behind the 1-2-2 zone as three buckets from sophomore Audrey Bittle was the lone scoring in the quarter for Mt. Vernon and Cassville took a 31-28 lead into the final quarter.
Cheyenne Bieber converted on an and-one to open the fourth quarter to cut the lead to just one but Cassville answered with another 7-0 run to essentially put the game out of reach.
Mt. Vernon falls to 1-4 on the year after dropping four straight. They will have an opportunity to turn things around this week as they opened Monday against Forsyth, before East Newton comes to town Thursday.
