Lady Mt’neers fall to Lamar in district semifinal

The Lady Mt’neers started playing their best volleyball down the stretch, winning six of their final eight contests to put a bow on the regular season. Mt. Vernon finished the regular season 12-12-4 and have the opportunity to defend their district title with the second seed. First, they had to take down Lamar.

The Lady Mt’neers came out on fire as they jumped to an 8-2 lead in the opening set behind a 6-0 run with senior Cameryn Cassity behind the service line. However, Lamar wouldn’t back down as they erased a 16-8 Lady Mt’neer lead and took a 19-17 lead themselves.
Cassity wouldn’t be denied though as she was dominant at the net and willed the Lady Mt’neers to the 25-23 first set victory. Mt. Vernon scored the first point of the second set, as well, but a 4-0 run by the Lady Tigers gave Lamar the lead and they wouldn’t look back. Lamar took set two, 25-15. The third set was dominated once again by Lamar and Kyleigh Talbott, as the Lady Tigers took the third set, 25-13.

The fourth set once again belonged to Lamar, but the defense of Mt. Vernon senior Solai Pham forced the Lady Tigers to work. However, Lamar went up decisively, 23-12. The Lady Mt’neers on the brink of elimination clawed back behind Pham and the outstanding defense of the five other seniors and scored the next seven points in a row to battle back to 23-19. Unfortunately, a couple of well-placed spikes from Lamar fended off the Mt. Vernon comeback attempt and defeated the Lady Mt’neers three sets to one.

The loss to Lamar ended the season for the Lady Mt’neers and the career for Raegan Boswell, Cameryn Cassity, Grace Bushman, Solai Pham, Hadley Cornell and Hailey Eldridge. Mt Vernon finished the season 12-13-4.
