Longtime MVIS principal Price retiring; Prevo set for next school year

Changing of the guard for Mt. Vernon Intermediate School leadership, first time since its construction
A new principal for the intermediate school has been announced for the 2020-2021 school year. The Mt. Vernon Board of Education held a special meeting Feb. 4, 2020. During the meeting, the board approved Dr. Garrett Prevo as the new principal of Mt. Vernon Intermediate School.
Prevo, an Aurora graduate, has 12 years of administration experience in Willard and Republic schools. He was a teacher in Republic and Hurley before becoming a principal at Orchard Hills Elementary in Willard.
Prevo earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree at Missouri State University and his doctorate of education at the University of Missouri.
Dulcie Price, current Mt. Vernon Intermediate School principal, will be retiring at the end of the school year after 12 years.
Price was the first and only principal at the Mt. Vernon Intermediate School since the school was built.
Board meeting…
The Mt. Vernon Board of Education held their regular meeting Feb. 20, 2020. During the meeting, Superintendent Scott Cook presented the board with a membership report for January. The total number of students enrolled in Mt. Vernon schools is 1,296. In comparison with last year’s enrollment, the number has decreased by six students.
Cook also gave a report of the free and reduced lunch count. The count increased by 3.09 students and the percentage increased by 1.12 percent. Summer school dates were approved during the meeting. The first day of Summer school will begin May 19 and will end June 12. School will start at 7:30 a.m. and will end at 2:45 p.m.
 The Mt. Vernon High School band director Brad Heckman reported this year’s highlights from the band program.
The band is getting ready to take a trip to Disney World soon and is closing in on their financial goals to fund the trip. This year the high school marching band performed Grimm Tales, which was chosen by the students. More than 190 hours were put in for rehearsal and 76 hours were reached for travel and performance.
The marching Mountaineers held a Mountaineer Marching Festival on Sept. 26 where 25 bands were hosted in field competition.
In closed session, the board approved Laura Baugh as a third grade teacher for the 2020- 2021 school year. Baugh will be replacing Erica Roberson, who is relocating out of state.

The school will be required to hold a meeting and reorganize within 14 days following the April 7 election. The board approved a date of April 21 for the meeting. The next regular meeting will be held March 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the south campus board room.
