Mary Alicia Chapin

Mary Alicia Chapin passed away Dec. 22, 2018, in the company of two of her children. She was born in Bethany, Nov. 15, 1924, to Lloyd Newton and Edna Ellen (Evans) Brown. After a high school courtship, she married Wayne Chapin in 1943.
The couple moved to Mt. Vernon in the fall of 1950 and opened the Mt. Vernon Veterinary Clinic, a large and small animal practice which Chapin managed. She was known for always being able to fit another chair around the table, as well as supporting civic and social organizations in the community such as PTA, daughters of the American Revolution, and the First Methodist Church of Mt. Vernon. In retirement, she enjoyed the company of their fellow car club members and other retired veterinarians and their families (the old timers club). Most of all, she relished spending time with her 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and was immensely proud of each of them.
She is survived by all four of her children; Wayne (Barry), Sue, Rodney (Rod), and Scott Chapin. She was preceded in death by: her dear husband; brothers, Lloyd Brown and Jim Brown; and  two grandsons.
A memorial graveside will be held at 3 p.m. May 3, 2019, at the Missouri Veteran’s Cemetery in Springfield. A visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. May 4, 2019, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with a celebration of life service at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in care of the funeral home.
