Meek’s Lumber and Hardware in Mt. Vernon has closed its doors. It wasn’t immediately clear when the store closed for business, but on Monday, Nov. 4, a sign posted on the storefront announced the store’s closing, and directed customers to the nearest location, at 827 Jerome Lane in Monett. Employees could be seen working in back of the store’s lot.
An employee at the Monett location referred all questions to Trent Waterhouse at the company’s corporate office.
Waterhouse said the store was closing due to improvements in the company’s delivery management system, which allows them to cover a wider geographic area with fewer locations.
“We can service a larger geographic area from a smaller number of locations, and that was one of the reasons behind (the closing),” he said, adding that 90-percent of Meek’s customers are professional builders and contractors, while 10-percent are consumers.
“This is really about, through the technology investments and efficiency and based on the location of our professional builder and contractor customers, we are just optimizing the number of locations.”
Waterhouse also said employees had the option to transfer to another Meek’s location, adding that some chose not to. He also said those who decided against the transfer would stay on long enough to close down the Mt. Vernon location, after which their employment would end.
