Miller girls take Walnut Grove tourney championship

Skylan Akins

The Morris Bro. Walnut Grove tournament has become one of the best small school holiday tournaments in the area. Miller girls took the championship last year and made it back to back championships again this year with a 39-34 win over Sparta.
Fair Play
The Lady Cardinals opened the tournament against a Fair Play team that was way overmatched. Miller won 59-6.
Walnut Grove
That set up a matchup against a very good Walnut Grove team (9-2) in the second round. The game was back and forth, and the host school played the Lady Cardinals tough, but it was Miller who emerged with a 32-19 win.
Ash Grove
Next up, was a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal game against MSU-signee Khloe Moad and Ash Grove. Miller was able to jump ahead early and took a big 51-29 win over the Lady Pirates to set up a championship matchup against a good Sparta squad.
Miller fell behind big early, but a huge 18-3 run in the second half gave the Lady Cardinals the 39-34 win over the Lady Trojans.
The tournament championship moves the Lady Cardinals to 11-2 this year with Pink & White champion Strafford coming to town on Thursday.
Miller Cardinals
The Miller boys also participated in the Walnut Grove tournament on the boys’ side but didn’t see as much success, as they were matched up with eventual runner-up, Sparta, in the opening round. They fell to the Trojans, before beating Pierce City in a narrow 41-36 win. They then fell again to a tough Niangua team. The Cardinals now sit at 2-6 on the season and will host the Miller Invitational tournament this week.
