In what has become an annual event at Miller High School, the Military Honor Committee, alongside the Diamond Wildcats, hosted their Military Appreciation Night on Friday, Sept. 17.
The evening began with a Presentation of Colors from the Jr. ROTC of Scott Regional Technology Center and then went on to honor the 13 soldiers who were recently killed in Afghanistan. Flags were placed at 13 empty chairs in remembrance of each of them. Military Honor Committee member Lillie Ricketts took the field to read each of their names aloud, followed by a moment of silence.
Miller senior Emma Hulbert then sang the National Anthem.
At halftime of the ballgame, each veteran and active duty member in attendance was asked to step onto the field so they could be recognized. Football players and cheerleaders from both teams, along with Honor Committee members, lined the end zone to shake the hands of each of them.
To conclude the evening’s events, Miller graduate and U.S. Marine Corp veteran, Pastor Tony Swillum addressed the crowd with a heartfelt speech about what it means to be an American and how we should never take our freedoms for granted.
All funds raised from the evening will go towards sending student guardians from both high schools, on Honor Flights of the Ozarks, to accompany veterans to Washington, D.C.
