Miller names new basketball coaches for coming school year

Miller basketball was placed in great hands the last few years when Sean Price came to lead the Cardinals back in 2020. The defense-minded coach led the Cardinals to a 21-8 season in the 2020-2021 season that saw Miller win their first district championship in 10 years. That magical run showed promise of a deep run, but Miller unfortunately ran into the buzzsaw that was Greenwood and NBA bound Aminu Mohammed. This last season, Price took over the girls team this and led the Lady Cardinals to their fourth straight district championship, before falling to state finalist Blue Eye in sectionals.
Recently, Price took the assistant principal and boys basketball coach position at Billings High School, leaving two vacancies to fill for outgoing Athletic Director Grant McDonald and incoming Athletic Director Justin Snider.

New Lady Cardinal coach
The first of the announced hirings should be an easy transition as girls assistant coach Ryan White will be promoted to the head coach of the Lady Cardinals next year.
“This is a fantastic opportunity. We have a lot of returning seniors with talent and some incoming freshmen that have the potential to be very good,” White said. “It is very special. I can’t put into words what it means to be a part of this kind of program at any point in your career. Starting out here makes it even more special.”

McDonald touts White’s work ethic.
“Coach White has been a tremendous worker for us the last few years,” McDonald said. “He’s a young coach that does a lot of good things. He is tremendous at building strong relationships and that is going to be crucial for growing the program and getting numbers back.”

New Cardinal coach
The boy’s team will bring back a familiar face in Brandon Weiss. Weiss burst on the scene as the Lady Cardinals coach during their Final Four runs back in the early 2010s. Since then, he has spent time as the girls’ basketball coach at Clever, Exeter, Seymour and, most recently, at Verona the past four seasons.
“My family and I are so excited about the opportunity to return to Miller High School. The whole process of returning to Miller has been surreal. This summer will be very important as we will be laying out our culture and foundations of our program.”

McDonald looks to Weiss’ experience to lead
“Coach Weiss was in Miller back in 2011 and 2012 and he had some success leading the Lady Cardinals to the Final Four,” McDonald said. “He is a veteran coach with a lot of experience with a young staff. His experience and wisdom will help us continue to develop our young coaches in the future.”
Weiss will reunite with new Athletic Director Justin Snider who was formerly the baseball coach at Clever. Weiss and Snider were both coaching at Clever during the 2013 school year.
“I have known Coach Weiss for almost 11 years now and he will do a good job,” Snider said. “Our kids have grown up together as well so it’ll be nice to have some familiar faces around and I think he will do a really good job with our boys’ program.”
The Weiss/White era begins this summer as they are hosting summer workouts and camps throughout the coming months.
