Mt. Vernon senior Kyle Orr drives the lane to finish over a pair of Hollister defenders. Mt Vernon started playing their best as of late heading into postseason play.

The Big-8 schedule has been brutal for the Mt’neers, but the Mt. Vernon team has managed to go 6-2 thus far in conference play. They had two more Big-8 matchups last week including a showdown with ninth ranked Hollister on Tuesday.

Versus Hollister
Both offenses struggled to get things going early on thanks to great half-court defense. A balanced Mt’neer attack gave Mt. Vernon a 10-8 lead. Sloppy play on both sides led to a slow start in the second quarter until a Dominic Dawson offensive rebound and bucket sparked some Mt’neer offense. Mason Ballay hit a pair of threes in the second period to give Mt. Vernon a 27-19 lead at the half. The Mt’neers were able to hit a few more shots in the third quarter but a big rally from the Tigers brought the score to 39-35 heading into the final quarter of play. Mt. Vernon was able to pull away late from the ninth-ranked Tigers and would complete the upset 55-43. Ballay led Mt. Vernon with 23 points.

Versus Seneca
Mt. Vernon wrapped up the regular season Thursday as they traveled to Seneca to take on the Indians. Mt. Vernon’s Kai Brown came out on fire with eight first-quarter points as the stingy defense of the Mt’neers held Seneca to just six first-quarter points. The Mt’neers led 12-6 after one. A balanced second quarter Mt. Vernon attack gave the Mt’neers a 23-9 lead at the break. The Mt’neer defense was relentless as they allowed eight points the entire second half, sealing the win 51-17. Kai Brown led the Mt’neers with 19. Tristan Jones added 10.
The two wins move the Mt’neers to 15-7 on the season heading into district play. The Mt’neers are slated to be back in action at home at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, as they take on the winner of Reed Spring and Cassville.
