Mt’neers lead from start to finish in Big 8 Crossover Championship

Senior Cale Miller opened the Mt’neer scoring in each quarter of the Big 8 Crossover championship at East Newton Tuesday, Feb. 18, propelling Mt. Vernon to a start to finish lead and the Big 8 Championship, 46-29.
The Mt’neers scored the first seven points of the game, four from Miller and a 3-pointer from Mason Ballay, and never trailed, holding the host Patriots to single digit scoring in each quarter. After one period, the Mt’neers held a 7-point edge, 14-7.
Miller and Slater Eldridge hit treys to open the second quarter, helping Mt. Vernon to a 24-13 lead at the half.
Mt. Vernon finished the night with nine 3-pointers, five of those in the second half, and the game was never in danger. Mt. Vernon won the title game by 17 points, 46-29.
Miller led the Mt’neers in scoring with 16 points. Colby Johnston added 10, including the final seven of the game.
The Mt’neers will compete in the Class 3 District 12 tournament this week at Aurora as the No. 1 seed. The championship game for Mt. Vernon, if they can get two early round wins, would be Saturday, Feb. 29, at 5 p.m.
