Mt. Vernon alum Stokes named MIAA Athlete of the Week for impressive Missouri Southern play

Missouri Southern freshman guard Lacy Stokes, a Mt. Vernon product, has been named the MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office, this week.
Stokes led the Lions to a 3-0 week beating Northeastern State on the road before taking out Washburn and Emporia State at home.
For the week, Stokes averaged 20.3 points, 6.6 assists, 6.0 rebounds, 3.7 steals per game while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 77.3 percent from the free throw line. Against the RiverHawks, she scored 23 points while dishing out eight assists for the fifth time this season and pulled down seven rebounds while coming away with four steals.
Against Washburn, she finished with 18 points and provided seven assists and five rebounds while recording her fourth game of five or more steals this season. She closed the week with a game-high 16 points to go with five assists and six rebounds against Emporia State. The back-to-back victories over the Ichabods and Lady Hornets was the first time since the 2003-04 season that the Lions accomplished the feat and propelled the Lions into fourth in the MIAA standings.
For the season, Stokes is leading the MIAA in assists, assist per game, steals and steals per game while ranking second in assist-turnover ratio and ranks in the top 10 in field goals attempted and made, free throws attempted and made and points per game. Across Division II, Stokes leads all freshman in assists, assists per game, assist-turnover ratio, steals, steals per game and fifth in points per game. In overall Division II, she ranks third in assists, assists per game, assist-turnover ratio and steals while being ninth in free throws made and tenth in steals per game.
As a team, the Lions have already surpassed their win total from a season ago and are on a three-game winning streak heading into this week’s contests with nationally-ranked Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney on the road.
