This season has been filled with trials and tribulations as the Mt. Vernon baseball team has been starting four freshmen and three sophomores just about all year long. While the start of the season saw plenty of learning pains, coach Nick Swillum has been very encouraged with how the young guys have improved. This improvement was seen as the Mt’neers took six of their final eight games including a 2-1 win over state-ranked Hollister.
They swept last week as they dominated Galena (Kan.) 10-4, Cassville 11-5, and Monett 6-2.
They improved their record to 12-12 and were rewarded the No. 3 seed in the Class 4 District 11 tournament where they saw six-seed Seneca in the opening round on Monday. The Mt'neers came away with the win in that contest, 3-1.
