Mt. Vernon football upsets state ranked Lamar Tigers

Lady Mt’neers split two volleyball games, look to host home tournament this weekend
 
The Mt. Vernon High School football team hosted Class 2, second ranked Lamar Tigers and pulled off the 21-0 upset. The Mt’neers scored seven points in the first, second and third quarters.
Mt. Vernon’s Coy Felton had five catches for 84 yards and a touchdown, Garrison Nordyke led with 13 tackles, Hunter Conway added nine tackles and the team rushed for 148 yards on 35 carries.
“This victory was truly a team effort,” said head coach Tom Cox. “From the starters to the subs to the scout team, they all worked together to make this win happen. Coach Johnston and the defensive staff had a great game plan and they prepared our players to execute it well. We won all three phases of the game, special teams, defense and offense. It’s a great day to be a Mt’neer.”
Mt. Vernon is 2-3 on the season and will travel to Cassville this Friday night. The Mountaineers are currently in fourth place in the Class 3, District 6 standings with 30.4 points. Seneca leads the district with 52.1 points, followed by Hollister (33.89 points), Cassville (33.2 points), Mt. Vernon, Aurora (28.9 points), Reeds Spring (18.99 points) and East Newton (16.9 points).

Volleyball
The Lady Mt’neers volleyball team hosted and defeated Monett in three sets on Thursday, Sept. 25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-14. Ziah Schmutz had 12 kills, 13 assists and two aces, Camryn Cornell had 10 kills, nine digs and two aces and Savannah Dampf finished the game with eight kills and three blocks.
Mt. Vernon started the week by traveling to Lamar and lost in three sets 19-25, 19-25 and 22-25. Dampf had 10 kills and four blocks, Schmutz led with 13 kills and 14 assists and Cornell finished the game with nine kills, three aces and 15 digs.
The Lady Mt’neers are 9-6-2 on the season and were scheduled to play at East Newton last night before welcoming McDonald County tomorrow night and hosting the Mt. Vernon Tournament on Saturday.
