The Mt. Vernon city pool reopened Memorial Day after making some substantial upgrades. The pool, which was closed for a full year, underwent renovations to stop a leak, add more play areas and make some quality of life changes.
The pool added multiple play features and made some adjustments that should prevent the pool from leaking any further. The pool has added a rock climbing wall, an underwater basketball court, two new water slides and a lazy river. There is also a new splash pad area for kids to play. The pool also added some area for shade. Updates to the locker rooms and bathrooms were made, as well.

The improvements come after a sales tax was passed in order to completely remodel the pool after it had consistently leaked. The old pool had been built over 40 years ago and was beginning to fall into disrepair. Instead of simply repairing the pool, the city decided it was time for a new addition. They passed a sales tax of a half-cent to begin to make it happen.

According to the swimming pool manager Ashley Ragsdale, the opening day went better than ever. There were over 548 patrons that entered the pool on the first day, and more than 381 in the first hour alone. Before the renovations, the pool only pulled in 150 swimmers on opening day.

Ragsdale expressed her thoughts on why the renovations were important to the community of Mt. Vernon.

"The changes to the pool are important because it gives the community something fun and safe to do this summer," she said. "My favorite new feature is the splash pad. The splash pad creates more of a family friendly atmosphere. Parents can play with small children while also being able to see older kids in the deeper areas."

The pool has seen many improvements from its former self, and now Mt. Vernon citizens get to enjoy their investment.
