No injuries, as blaze destroys Huff barn northeast of Mt. Vernon

A barn behind the Dale Huff residence went up in flames Monday afternoon, possibly thanks to a wood burning stove. No one was home, at 8389 Lawrence 1170 northeast of Mt. Vernon, when the fire broke out in a large, nearby barn. The building not only housed Huff’s property but also a 10-wheeler truck and trailer full of wheat owned by land renter Jeremy Pendleton. Pendleton’s rig was able to be removed before it was made toast by the inferno.
“It was a tough fire to fight,” said Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Brad DeLay. ”High winds were probably the most detrimental to the attempt. The wind was fanning the flames at an accelerated rate and there was a heavy load of wood also in the building along with other materials.”
More than a dozen emergency vehicles answered the call from area departments including Mt. Vernon, Stotts City, Billings, Halltown, Miller Rural and Aurora Rural. (Photo by Ryan Squibb)
