Sammy Dee (Buehler) Evans

Sammy Dee (Buehler) Evans, 96, passed away Jan. 28.
She was born Sept. 23, 1922, to the late Sam and Blanch (McCormick) Buehler. Evans graduated from Verona High School and then furthered her education by earning her BS in Education from Missouri State University and then her Masters of Arts in Education from Drury University.
She married Joseph Cornell Evans in 1941. They were blessed with over 69 years together before his passing in 2011.
Evans was an elementary school teacher for 32 years, spending her early years in a one room school house in rural Monett. She taught first and third grades throughout her career at Monett elementary school. She was a member of First Baptist Church and belonged to the Missions Group. She was an active member and served as president of Kappa Kappa Iota Teachers’ Sorority.
Evans loved gardening and was a member of the Monett Garden Club. She grew bountiful vegetables in her summer gardens and also had a variety of beautiful flowers and house plants. She was a very talented seamstress. She crafted beautiful baby doll outfits and American Girl doll outfits for her great-granddaughters. Her true gift was needlecrafts, making lovely needle point pictures, counted cross-stitch items, and spectacular hand pieced quilts. In her younger years, she and Cornell would spend their summers traveling and visited all the United States as well as Canada and Mexico. They loved camping in State and National Parks with their grandchildren. She is survived by: three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Lois Phariss, of Springfield. Evans was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; children, Dian House and Samuel (Buddy) Evans; and a sister, Hazel Williams.
Funeral services were held Feb. 2, 2019, at the Buchanan Funeral Home in Monett. Interment was in the Bethel Cemetery, south of Monett. Memorials may be made to Mid America Ministries, 102 N. 37th, Nixa, MO 65714 or in care of the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Buchanan Funeral Home in Monett.
