Purchase means growth opportunity for local operation

About 16 months after Silgan ceased operations in Mt. Vernon, Schreiber Foods has purchased the company’s old building, which sits next door.
Andrew Tobisch, communications director for Schreiber, said purchasing the building was a logical step, given its proximity to Schreiber’s Mt. Vernon location and will give the company the opportunity to expand, should the need ever occur.
“We were presented with an opportunity that provides us with additional space right next to our current operations,” he said. “We’re hoping to use that space in the future to expand our capabilities so we can continue making a meaningful difference in the Mt. Vernon community and with our customers.”
In the past, Silgan manufactured steel cans in their Mt. Vernon location, so if Schreiber decides to expand their operations into the building, it will have to be refitted. Tobisch said Schreiber hasn’t yet decided how the building will be used.
“What needs to be done … depends on what we decide to do with the building,” he said.
Beyond holding onto the building for a future use, Tobisch said he didn’t know how Schreiber would make use of the plant or if any new employees would be hired. However, he did say he believed Schreiber’s acquisition of the Silgan building could be very positive for Mt. Vernon.
“It means we’ll have more space to continue making a meaningful impact on the community,” he said.
Tobisch declined to say how much Schreiber paid for the building.
