Shiver me timbers

This monster pin oak tree was one thing that went bump in the night as it uprooted and ended up inside a home on Sloan Avenue. After the tree was partially cut, the stump returned close to its original position.

The extensive damage to the home was apparent once all remnants of the tree were removed.

According to the county website the owner of the home is Maurice Harlow. (Photos by Ryan Squibb)

One month after extraordinary hail storm, high winds return to topple trees in Mt. Vernon
A storm in the early morning hours of Thursday, June 4, brought in winds high enough to topple several trees in and around Mt. Vernon.
The winds also broke out the sign of Angus Branch Grille on Mt. Vernon Boulevard and affected the drive through at the restaurant’s neighbor, Mid-Missouri Bank.
Just across Mt. Vernon Boulevard along Sloan Avenue, a handful of trees blew over, including one huge pin oak that crushed through the roof of a home, possibly resulting in a total loss of the structure. The resident was reportedly at work when the storm blew through and no one was hurt in the incident.
The same uprooted tree broke through a gas line in the fall, which required repair from Spire Utilities, who was quickly on the scene. Also on the scene in short order were workers from Hendry’s Tree and Lawn Service who began work on the removal of the tree.
“This is the worst I’ve seen in 13 years of doing this,” said Rick Hendry, as he took a break from his chainsaw.
The north side of Mt. Vernon also saw a number of trees brought down, including at least one large oak on the former MRC campus at 600 North Main Street.
