Only the roof of a mail carrier’s vehicle remains visible after flood waters swept it away just north of Hoberg, on Lawrence 2137, last Thursday afternoon.

After the floodwater subsided over the weekend the condition of the formerly submerged mail carrying Jeep was made apparent. (Photo submitted)

Vehicles stall, but no water rescues necessary during deluge last week

Up to seven inches of rain fell in Lawrence County on Wednesday, May 4, and Thursday, May 5, according to information provided by the National Weather Service, creating high water levels and flooding on low-lying roads in the county. However, while some vehicles stalled when their drivers tried to take them in high waters, no one was hurt or needed to be rescued from their vehicles, Lt. Jon Ford, of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, reported.
One vehicle that was caught in the flood waters was a U.S. Postal Carrier vehicle which was trapped on Lawrence 2137, just north of Hoberg.
“That vehicle did float off of the roadway into the creek area and came to rest against some trees where the driver exited the vehicle,” Ford said.
Ford also said two other vehicles were trapped in flood waters; one was in Pierce City on Lawrence 1050, south of Highway 37, and the other was on Lawrence 1165, just south of Lawrence 2130, east of Mt. Vernon. Ford said that when they arrived at the vehicle’s locations, the drivers had already exited them.
“All vehicles we had contact with were abandoned by the time the Sheriff's Office and Fire Rescue arrived on scene,” Ford said. “(Conservation) Agent Andy Barnes and another conservation agent did have their fast water rescue and gear out and available if needed.”
All motorists are reminded that if they encounter a flooded road, to turn their vehicles around and find another way to their destination rather than attempt to cross.
