The new restrooms at the Spirit of ’76 Park were temporarily closed over the weekend due to damage caused by vandalism.
City Administrator Max Springer said the vandalism took place from Aug. 12 through Aug. 14.
“We have been hit by vandals Thursday, Friday and Saturday,” he said. “The damage is approximately $500 over the course of the three days.”
The restrooms were reopened on Monday, Aug. 16. Springer is asking that anybody who has any information about the vandalism contact the Mt. Vernon Police Department.
“We are asking if anyone knows anything to please let the police know,” he said. “It is very frustrating to see the improvements to the park trashed.”
The city had the new restrooms built at a cost of almost $275,000 in the last year.
The number for the Mt. Vernon Police Department is (417) 466-4752.
