As Andy Williams said, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” Yes, Christmas is cool, but for any basketball fan in the area, Christmas means hot basketball play at the annual Blue & Gold and Pink & White tournaments.

Eyes across the state were eagerly awaiting the score to an early season top 5 showdown in Blue Eye against Miller Lady Cardinals. Blue Eye comes in at No. 4 in the preseason MBCA behind a senior heavy roster. They enter the showdown 3-2 after a brutal early season schedule.

The Mt. Vernon-Aurora rivalry runs deep. Those who have played in it, don’t forget it. Recently, the Mt. Vernon Mt’neers have dominated the rivalry, to the point to where it's hard to call it a rivalry. Since 2008, Aurora has only bested Mt. Vernon twice. Once in 2009, and once in 2018.

The Mt. Vernon High School cheerleaders competed at the Missouri Cheer Coaches Association State Championships in Cape Girardeau, on Saturday, Dec. 11, where they placed third in the Class 2 - Large Division.

The Miller Lady Cardinal basketball squad is coming off a 2020 quarterfinal appearance with the majority of the team back. The big question, however, is how they would fare in a brutal opening stretch of the season. So far this year, they haven’t seen anyone smaller than class 3.

One of the greatest traditions here in the Ozarks is the numerous holiday tournaments. Our Lawrence County teams will participate in two of the most prestigious, as both Mt. Vernon and Aurora teams will play in the Blue and Gold/Pink and White tournaments in Springfield.

Mt. Vernon graduate Lacy Stokes is really good at basketball. That much was evident during her four years with the Lady Mt’neers. Now she is taking it to Missouri Southern and showing the Lady Lion faithful what Mt’neer country already knew.

It has been quite the four months for Miller senior Claudia Hadlock. Back in August she announced via Twitter that she was committing to Cottey College to continue her academic and basketball career.

The Miller Lady Cardinal basketball team defeated Mansfield in their season opener, 39-31, in a hard-fought battle Monday night. Miller coach Sean Price talked about how this year's Lady Cardinal team was going to be a new look, and boy was he right.
