Ag teacher Prewitt no longer employed by Mt. Vernon R-5 School District

Longtime agriculture educator Steven Prewitt is no longer employed by the Mt. Vernon School District. His last day on the job was March 4, according to Mt. Vernon School District Superintendent Scott Cook. Cook, however, wasn’t able to give any details on Prewitt’s departure.
“Mr. Prewitt is no longer employed by the district. Beyond this confirmation, I am unable to provide information regarding individual personnel matters,” Cook wrote in an email response to questioning on the matter.
An obtained document from the Missouri Department of Social Services dated Feb. 20, 2025 describes a report from two students who alleged sexual abuse from Prewitt. However, an investigation by the entity into the matter determined that there was insufficient evidence to support claims of abuse, clearing Prewitt of the allegations.
Later, a compliance officer with the Mt. Vernon School District, Billy Redus, conducted an investigation and found that Prewitt “more likely than not” violated Board Policy AC, which is a prohibition against illegal discrimination, harassment and retaliation.
Redus also contended that Prewitt violated Policy GCCB—staff conduct, and Policy GBH—staff/student relations.
When reached for comment, Prewitt declined to speak on the situation.
Per the district’s website, FFA advisor Prewitt has taught for a total of 18 years, 14 with the district, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education from Missouri State University. The courses he taught were Agriculture Science 1, Conservation Forestry, Agriculture Structures 1 and 2.
Cook did add some enlightenment on Prewitt’s vacant position.
“The position was open for the 2025-2026 school year and has been filled for next year,” Cook confirmed.
