New facility features multi-purpose court, indoor track, more
The Aurora Recreation Center is open for business.
The City of Aurora recently unveiled the completed 23,000 square-foot facility during an open house on Saturday, April 12, and officially marked its opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, April 14.
The Rec Center took about a year to build, at a cost of $12 million.
The new recreation building provides users with many opportunities for physical activity. A multi-purpose court can be used for different sports, including volleyball, basketball and pickleball. There are also three different exercise areas with a variety of exercise equipment, including cardio and weight machines, free weights, and hand weights. Additionally, for those who enjoy walking or jogging, there are both indoor and outdoor tracks.Anthony Finzo, Recreation Center director, said that members will also eventually be able to take part in fitness classes there.
“Classes are still in the works,” he said.
The new facility offers more than just exercise, however. The Community Room, found on the building’s lower floor, can be rented out for meetings, parties, or other special events. It can be subdivided into three separate rooms and also has a digital projector for showing videos, PowerPoint presentations, and more.
Troy Alley, who recently purchased a membership at the Aurora Recreation Center, said he was impressed, calling it “extremely nice,” and adding it gave him access to equipment not available to him elsewhere.
“They’ve got machines upstairs (that) … I don’t have at home,” he said.
However, Alley said what he really liked about the facility was the indoor track.
“The big thing (is) I like the indoor track,” he said. “The outdoor one’s fine too, but I can come up here and walk if I want to.
