Catherine Elizabeth Birkenbach

Catherine Elizabeth Birkenbach, 72, of Monett, passed away Nov. 22, 2019, while at Cox South Medical Center in Springfield.
Birkenbach was born June 22, 1947 in Spalding, Neb. to the late Harry and Mildred (Tomjack) Starkey. Following her graduation from St. Agnes Catholic High School in Springfield, she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from SMS in Springfield. She began her teaching career at St. Joseph Catholic School in Springfield, then St. Lawrence Catholic School in Monett, where she was currently a member and finally St. Mary’s Catholic School in Pierce City, where she also held position for a time as principal.  In 1979, she married Joseph William “Joe Bill” Birkenbach in Monett. They were blessed with over 38 years together before his passing in 2017.
Survivors include: daughter, Cathy (John) Velten of Pierce City; and brothers, Frank Starkey and Dan (Cathy) Starkey; one grandson; one granddaughter; and a host of extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by brothers, Dean and Jim Starkey.
Funeral Mass was held Nov. 26, 2019 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Monett. Rosary service was held at Buchanan Funeral Home with a visitation that followed. Memorials may be made to the St. Lawrence Catholic School in care of the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Buchanan Funeral Home.
