DAINNIE RAE HEROD

Dainnie Rae Herod, age 88, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri passed away at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. He was born July 14, 1936, in Polo, Missouri; the son of Ralph and Hazel Louise (Logan) Herod.
Dainnie was a 1953 graduate of Lathrop High School in Lathrop, Missouri. A member of Round Grove Baptist Church, he was a machinist and beef cattle farmer. After graduation, he worked construction on new mountain roads in Colorado. While living in Wichita, Kansas he was a member of the Marine Corps’ Ready Reserve and also employed by Boeing before purchasing a farm in La Russell, Missouri and moving his family there a few years later. He retired from Carnation Can Company in Mt Vernon after 30 years of service.
He spent many days at the coffee shop telling tales with other local farmers and anyone who’s ear he could bend, forming many long-lasting friendships. He and Ferol loved to square dance and waltz, spending many Saturday nights dancing to a local country band. He loved to travel with his wife and family, traveling with her to all 50 states and three continents. He was a farmer at heart, who had a love for the work as much as watching the young calves play in the pasture.
On December 7, 1957, in Wichita, Kansas, he made his love, Ferol Mae Bumgarner, his bride; 63 years later and, even after her passing, he still referred to her in the same loving terms, daily. Together they raised two daughters and a granddaughter.
Dainnie is survived by two daughters, Danette Dallas and her husband, Willie of Mangum, Oklahoma and Denise White and her husband, Rodney of Stotts City, Missouri; three grandchildren: Willie Dallas, Jr. of Moore, Oklahoma, Ineke Dallas of Edmond, Oklahoma and Anna Herod Terry and her husband Jeff, of Warrensburg, Missouri; three great-grandchildren: Jarrett Terry, SPC Jaron Terry and Joie Terry and several nieces and nephews.
Dainnie was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph, and Louise Herod; stepmother, Mary; one sister, Mary Gillespie; and his beloved wife of 63 years, Ferol Mae Herod.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with burial to follow at Goss Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2025, in the funeral home chapel.
