Elza McAfee

Elza McAfee, age 91, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2019, at her home, following an illness.
Elza was born December 30, 1927, in Marshfield, Missouri, a twin daughter of Lemuel Wesley and Lillie Mae (Grooms) Rust. She gave her heart to the Lord when she was 10 years old at a small country church north of Marshfield and lived a Christian life.
Elza lived in Marshfield until she married the love of her life, John McAfee, on July 26, 1947. They were married at Central Assembly of God, Springfield, where they were members. John and Elza moved to their dairy farm in Chesapeake, Missouri, where they shared laughter and tears that only a dairy farmer could understand. To this marriage was born a son, John McAfee, Jr., who was an elementary band director in the Carthage School System for 35 years.
Elza enjoyed gardening, quilting, and visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She taught Sunday school in her younger days at Sycamore Assembly of God near their home. She was an active member of the Mt. Vernon Parent-Teacher Association, having held offices from Reporter to President. Elza worked 14 years in the offices of Ozark Electric Coop, Mt. Vernon, Missouri.
Elza is survived by her son, John McAfee, Jr., and his wife, Diana, of Carthage, Missouri; two grandchildren, Michelle Logan-Buchanan and husband, Rob, Carthage, Missouri, and Jennifer Maag and husband, Tom, Highland, Illinois; four great-grandchildren, Aiden Logan, Keegan Logan, Emma Maag and Lizzy Maag.  She is also survived by multiple nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John McAfee, on January 10, 2018; her twin sister, Zelma Thomas, sisters Fay (twin of Ray, died at birth), Vida Mae and Viola Davis; eight brothers, Ray Rust, Frank Rust, Turner Rust, Henry Rust, Elmer Rust, Paul Rust, Cecil Rust and Robert Rust. Elza enjoyed nothing more than having folks over to her house and serving them a meal.  In that spirit, friends and family are invited to a come and go visitation at her home on Sunday, September 1, 2019, from 1:00 to 5:00. A light meal will be served as we celebrate Elza’s life.
