Mt. Vernon looks to final regular season game this Friday in Reeds Spring as districts on horizon
The Mt. Vernon Mt’neers won a stunning victory, 56-21, against the Marshfield Bluejays during their game at Mt’neers Stadium on Friday, Oct. 13. The Mt’neers are now seven wins, one loss for the season.
The Mt’neers drew first blood about midway through first quarter when they forced a turnover on downs to go on offense on the Bluejays 27-yard line. Braden Dodson capped off the offensive drive with a three-yard touchdown.
Going on offense, the Bluejays seemed poised to make a touchdown as they came within four yards of the Mt’neers end zone, but then Ryder Dampf recovered a fumble to put the Mt’neers back on offense. Fighting their way across the field, the Mt’neers scored their second touchdown when Gavin Johnston completed a 66-yard touchdown pass to Jarrett Zerby, thereby capping off a 96-yard touchdown drive.
Near the end of the quarter, Juliun Hernandez intercepted the ball on the Bluejays 43-yard line and the Mt’neers went on an offensive drive that ended with Cody Downing scoring a touchdown. Landon Popa followed each of the touchdowns with a successful PAT, making the score 21-0 at the end of the quarter.
The Mt’neers gained their fourth touchdown about midway through second quarter when Dodson made a 14-yard score.
Almost immediately after the Bluejays went on offense, they fumbled the ball, which a host of Mt’neers recovered, putting them on offense on Marshfield’s 22-yard line. Johnston then completed a touchdown pass to Jake Leeper, giving the Mt’neers their fifth touchdown.
Afterwards, the Bluejays scored a touchdown and PAT to get on the board, but the Mt’neers quickly responded on offense with Hunter Conway making an eight-yard touchdown run. Popa again followed up each of the Mt’neers touchdowns with a successful PAT to make the score 42-7 at the end of the half.
In the third quarter, Dodson capped off an offensive drive with a four-yard touchdown run about halfway through the quarter; Popa followed up with a successful PAT. The Bluejays then made their second touchdown and PAT, making the score 49-14 at the end of the third.
The Mt’neers scored again near the beginning of the quarter when Conway made a 13-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful PAT by Popa. The Bluejays also gained a touchdown and PAT, and the game ended with a score of 56-21.
This Friday, the Mt’neers travel to Reeds Spring, where they will face the Wolves in their final game of the regular season.
