The Mt. Vernon volleyball team has jumped out to a slow start this season sitting at just 2-5 after a tough early schedule. However, they were faced with a fantastic opportunity to kickstart the rest of their season as they hosted the October Aces tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Mt’neers were placed in a brutal pool and took on a very good Camdenton team who was one of the favorites to win the entire tournament. The Lady Lakers defeated Mt. Vernon 25-18 and 25-22 to open up pool play. The road for the Lady Mt’neers didn’t get any easier as they took on 11-5 Mountain View Liberty. The Lady Mt’neers were flying all over the place and used great defensive play from senior libero Solai Pham to take the first set 25-21. Liberty would respond and take set two in a hard fought match 25-22.
The Lady Mt’neers also met Big 8 rival McDonald County. Mt. Vernon made easy work of the Mustangs 25-16 and 25-19.

Mt. Vernon fell just shy of the championship bracket but received the No. 8 seed and a first round bye in the consolation bracket. The Aurora Lady Houns defeated Hollister to set up a backyard brawl matchup with the Lady Mt’neers. Mt. Vernon started playing their best volleyball of the day in the first set as they took the opening set 25-13. They followed up the first set with another win 25-18 to advance to the consolation championship. Reeds Spring took the other side of the net and challenged the Lady Mt’neers in the opening set but it was ultimately Mt. Vernon that emerged victorious 28-26. The second set was just as competitive as it took extra play once again, but a kill by an exhausted Cameryn Cassity crowned Mt. Vernon Consolation Champions.
“This tournament was a great tournament and has been super competitive and for us to go 3-3 in pool play and regroup was great. I am proud of the girls for fighting to the finish,” Coach Bridgett Schmutz said following the game.
The tournament moves Mt. Vernon to 8-10-4 on the year. They will be back in action Thursday as they take on Big 8 foe Springfield Catholic.
