The judgement, which came almost nine months after the crash, was handed down by Barry County Judge David Allen Cole on March 5.
According to the report, at approximately 10:13 p.m. on Friday, June 23, 2023, deputies from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office were pursuing a white 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 northbound on Missouri Highway 37, as they suspected the driver was impaired. The pursuit began around Pierce City and Lawrence County deputies alerted other agencies saying the pursuit was reaching speeds up to 100 mph on county roads.
As the pursuit approached the intersection of Missouri Highway 37 and U.S. Highway 60, in Monett, the driver of the pickup ran a red light and t-boned a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, driven by Larry A. Brock, 53, of Crane. The high-speed impact sent Brock’s vehicle over a bridge and into a dry creek bed, instantly killing both Brock and his passenger, Lydia E. Shorey, 61, also of Crane. Neither were wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. Contreras-Maldonado, who was 19 at the time of the accident, was not injured in the crash and was arrested and charged with felony DWI involving the death of two or more persons; felony possession of controlled substance-cocaine; felony resisting arrest; careless and imprudent driving resulting in an accident; no valid plates; no insurance; texting while driving; and no seat belt. He was booked into the Barry County Jail.
Contreras Maldonado originally entered a plea of not guilty, however, on Jan. 4, 2024, as part of a plea agreement, he withdrew his plea of not guilty and entered a plea of guilty to charges of felony DWI resulting in the death of two or more. All other charges were dismissed as part of the agreement. He was sentenced to nine years in the Deptartment of Corrections.
