Mt’neer baseball defeat Billings and Pierce City, Lady Mt’neers pick up two more wins

The Mt. Vernon High School baseball team played three games last week, winning two of them.
 
The Mt’neers traveled to Billings on Friday, April 3 and defeated the Wildcats 11-2.
 
Mt. Vernon jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and never looked back, adding a single run in the second, four runs in the third, a single run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth inning. Billings scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
 
Brody Wilmoth went 2-4 with a home run, double, two runs scored and two RBIs, Aaden Tennison was 2-3 with a home run, double, two runs scored and two RBIs, Jax Evans went 2-3 double, two runs scored and two RBIs and Jackson Hood finished the game 1-4 with a double.
 
On Thursday, April 2, the Mt’neers hosted Pierce City and won the game 12-2.
 
After a scoreless first inning, Mt. Vernon added four runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Eagles answered back with two runs in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 4-2 but that would be it for Pierce City as the Mt’neers went on a scoring frenzy the rest of the game, adding three runs in the third and fourth innings and two runs in the fifth inning.
 
Josh Vernon was 2-2 with a home run, three runs scored and an RBI, Landon Wilmoth went 1-1 with a triple and two runs scored, Zerrik Pham was 1-2 with a double and two RBIs and Matthew Hodgson finished up 1-2 with two runs scored.
 
The Mt’neers hosted Lighthouse Senior High on Tuesday, March 31 but lost to the Chargers, 13-5.
 
Mt. Vernon got out to a 1-0 first inning lead and held that lead until the fifth inning, when Lighthouse scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. Mt. Vernon added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to retake a 4-2 lead. The Chargers added another run in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 4-3. A 10-run seventh inning, allowed Lighthouse to put the game out of reach and secure the nine-run victory.
 
Cash Garner was 1-3 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI, Hood went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs.
 
The Mt’neers are now 4-6 on the season and were scheduled to host Aurora last night and Cassville tomorrow night before heading to Parkview on Friday.
 
Softball
The Class 2, fifth ranked Lady Mt’neers, added three more wins to their total last week to go to 11-2 on the season.
 
Mt. Vernon hosted Lamar on Thursday and was able to defeat the Lady Tigers 8-5.
 
The Lady Mt’neers got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and increased that lead to 2-0 at the end of the second inning. Lamar scored three times in the top of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead and increased that lead to 5-2 by the end of the top of the fourth inning. Mt. Vernon added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 5-4. A four-run sixth inning secured the 8-5 win for Mt. Vernon.
 
AJ Shipman was 1-3 with two RBIs, Lilly Burk went 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI and Hailey Stewart was 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
 
On Tuesday, Mt. Vernon traveled to Pittsburgh, Kan. but fell to the Purple Dragons, 6-3.
 
Pittsburgh jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead, but the Lady Mt’neers was able to cut that lead to 3-2 after the third inning. Mt. Vernon tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the fifth inning, but a three-run sixth inning allowed the Purple Dragons to pull away and win the game.
 
Burk went 1-3 with a triple and two RBIs and Stewart finished the game 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
 
The Lady Mt’neers traveled to Ash Grove on Monday, March 30 and came away with an 8-2 win.
 
Neither team scored in the first inning, but Mt. Vernon took care of the scoring drought in the second inning, plating five runs to take a 5-0 lead. The Lady Pirates scored twice in the bottom of the inning to cut the lad to 5-2. The Lady Mt’neers scored their final three runs in the fourth inning to secure the win.
 
Emily Schubert went 1-4 with a double and two RBIs, Shipman was 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI and Stewart finished the game 2-4 with two runs and an RBI.
 
Mt. Vernon was scheduled to play against Diamond on Monday and last night against Southwest (Washburn). The Lady Mt’neers will travel to Kennett to take on Kennett and Gosnell, Ark. on Friday and Doniphan on Saturday.
