Mt’neers hit two-game winning streak, first streak of season, look to Seneca for next victory

The Mt. Vernon High School baseball team played four games last week, winning two of them to improve their record to 3-8 on the season.
The Mt’neers hosted and defeated Springfield Parkview, 9-4, on Friday, April 11.
Mt. Vernon traveled to Cassville on Thursday, April 10, and came home with a come-from-behind 14-9 victory.
Gavin Johnston, Aaden Tennison and Jaxen Evans each had two hits in the game. Zerrick Pham went 1-2 with three RBI’s. Braden Dodson got the win, going six and a third innings, allowing four hits, two runs, one earned with nine strikeouts.
“Cassville jumped on us early in the first inning putting up seven runs,” said head coach Kyler Shoff. “Our guys battled back scoring a couple runs or more every inning. I couldn’t be more proud of our guys for having the focus and determination to come back from that big of a deficit.”
On Tuesday, April 8, Mt. Vernon traveled to Aurora and lost to the host Houn’ Dawgs, 5-1.
The Mt’neers scored in the first inning, but the Houn’s answered back with five runs over the next five innings to take the game. Dodson, Hudson Gaddy and Brayden Jameson each had a hit in the contest.
“Our pitching and defense played well against a good Aurora team,” said Shoff. “Our bats finally started coming alive, but we were hitting it right at people, unfortunately.”
Mt. Vernon started their week by traveling to Logan-Rogersville on Monday, April 7, and came home with an 8-0 loss. Peyton Jones and Tennison each had a hit in the game.
“We didn’t play our best game,” said Shoff. “I don’t think the score reflected how well we competed with the No. 2, Class 4 team with their No. 1 and 2 pitchers on the mound.”
The Mt’neers are now 3-8 on the season and were scheduled to play Neosho on Monday before hosting Nevada last night. Mt. Vernon will then travel to Seneca to finish up the week tomorrow night.
