Mt. Vernon could soon have parks and rec. director

Mt. Vernon may soon hire a parks and recreation director following their board of aldermen meeting on June 23. 

The proposition was brought forward to the board by City Administrator Robert Harrington. Harrington had been involved in a discussion on the matter previously at a personnel committee meeting, which prompted him to bring the possibility to the aldermen. 

The board approved this request and gave Harrington the authority to advertise for the new position. Harrington is to bring a valid candidate to be considered by the board by the first meeting in August.

Water pressure issue

Another issue brought forward by Harrington during the meeting was that of water pressure shortcomings. Harrington reported that the city had received several calls regarding instances of reduced water pressure at the new subdivision near 417 athletics. 

There was no immediate solution for this issue, said Harrington, as the only available fix would be to purchase a utility-scale pressure station, ranging from $1.5 million on the low end to $3 million at most. This would be a big ask from the city, but Harrington stated that residents could purchase a small residential pump system that ranges around $500, providing the same outcome. 

Landrum Street culvert

Harrington also reported that work on the Landrum Street culvert project is to begin in the next few weeks. Road closures are possible as part of the work, and residents are encouraged to check Facebook for updates on the project and closures. 

City off July 6

The city also approved Harrington's request that the city observe Independence Day on July 6, rather than July 3, this year, as several staff will be at work preparing the park for Red, White and Boom.
