Aurora man aims gun inside police station, charged with assault, more
An Aurora man is facing multiple felony charges after he allegedly entered the Aurora-Marionville Police Department (AMPD) and pointed a gun at police officers. Jeff Nelson, 57, is charged with four counts of first degree assault, special victim; armed criminal action; making a terrorist threat in the first degree, and unlawful use of a weapon.
According to the probable cause statement in the case, on Sunday, Jan. 5, Nelson entered the building armed with a loaded handgun and “in an intoxicated state.” He pointed the firearm at the four people in the building. He allegedly made comments such as, “Just shoot me,” and “I want to die.”
According to a post on the AMPD by Wes Coatney, chief of police, Nelson was disarmed after a taser was deployed on him, and he was taken into custody. He was then taken to a hospital for treatment and booked into the Lawrence County Jail on Friday, Jan. 10.
According to later Facebook posts by Coatney, one of the people who Nelson allegedly pointed the gun at was a firefighter; the others were police officers. Coatney also noted that officers would normally react with lethal force when someone points a gun at them, but the officers whom Nelson allegedly confronted “had some time and positioning to maintain their safety” during the situation.
According to online records, Nelson appeared in court on Monday, Jan. 13, where he waived formal arraignment, and again on Thursday, Jan. 16, for a bond reduction hearing. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, Feb. 10 for a preliminary hearing.
