Stokes named MIAA Athlete of Week, again

Missouri Southern guard Lacy Stokes has been named the MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for Week 13 as announced by the league office. This is the third straight week in a row that she has been distinguished with the honor and the fourth time this season, the most of any women’s basketball player this season.
Stokes led the Lions to three wins this week taking out Lincoln (77-48) in Jefferson City, #21 Missouri Western (71-57) and Northwest Missouri (56-49) at home extending the Lions win streak to 11, the longest in MIAA play in school history.
Stokes averaged 21.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.3 steals, 5.0 assists and 0.33 turnovers a game while playing 37.3 minutes a night. This week saw her set the MSSU freshman steals record and score over 400 points becoming the first freshman since Suzanne Sutton (1982-83) to cross that threshold and currently is second behind Patti Killian’s (1977-78) record total.
Stokes began the week with a 15-point, nine-rebound, seven-steal and six-assist performance against Lincoln. Her seven steals in the game were the second-most steals in a game by a Lion freshman since the stat was recorded with Jayme Callahan (1998-99) having an eight steal game once. Against the #21 Griffons, she finished with game-highs in 24 points, six assists and six steals and connected on a season-high three three’s. During the game against Western, Stokes set the freshman steal record at MSSU that was previously 76 by Kim Bowen (1985-86). She wrapped up the week with a 26 point, six rebound, three assists and three steal performance against Northwest.
Currently her totals of 412 points is second among freshman, while her 133 assists are second among freshman and is tied for the seventh-most overall in a single-season. Her 84 steals are the most by a freshman and the fifth-best overall in a single-season at MSSU.
