Last week was an exciting one for Mt. Vernon High School with two of the Mt. Vernon senior cheerleaders signing to continue their academic and cheer careers at the next level.
Amari Tudor
On Thursday, March 21, Mt. Vernon High School senior Amari Tudor signed her national letter of intent to continue her academic and cheer career as a Drury Panther. Tudor was offered a scholarship in early March after being recruited over the year.
Tudor, has spent the last five years as a cheerleader for the Mt. Vernon School District. Along with cheer she was also a member of the Mt. Vernon Coquettes dance team, FCCLA President, FCA, Art Club, NHS, Interact Club, Student Council, senior class secretary and Rotary youth leadership team. She was also awarded UCA and UDA All American.
Tudor says she plans to major in elementary education and to also coach cheer. When asked how she feels she said, “Nowhere felt like home to me as much as Drury did. I love the coaches and the cheer program is by far the most elite co-ed team around. It is definitely the best fit for me and I know I will be pushed to grow as an athlete.” She also indicated campus location played a key factor in her decision, “I love the campus and it is close to my family so they will be able to come support me.”
Coach Hannah Tiffin said, “Amari has been an asset to the Mountaineer Cheer squad over the last four years, her ability to engage the crowd is something she prides herself in. She has worked hard to get to this point and we know she will represent us well at the next level.” Reese Barrett
On Friday, March 22, Mt. Vernon High School senior Reese Barrett signed her national letter of intent to continue her academic and cheer career as a Southeast Missouri State University Redhawk. Barrett was offered a scholarship and spot on the SEMO squad last December after she was recognized as a standout performer at the state competition.
Barrett, who has been a member of the Lady Mt’neer Cheer and Competition teams for the past six years, has had a spectacular high school career. She is a two-time All-American, All-State Base, received Academic All-State and is a two time Regional Champion. She not only excels on the sidelines of football and basketball games but also in the classroom, carrying a 4.0 GPA. She is also a member of the Track & Field team, Spanish Club President, NHS Executive, Interact Club Secretary, FCCLA, The Squad and Student Council.
Barrett says she plans to major in English Education.
She said, “I am so happy and grateful for my coaches and especially my teammates. They’ve helped me so much over the past year and have always been willing to put in extra time to help me practice and film my skills. I truly could not be where I am today without them.”
Coach Hannah Tiffin said, “Reese has been a strong leader on our squad and her determination for success is admirable. Reese’s strength and versatility will be missed greatly, but we know she will excel at the collegiate level. ”
