The Freistatt Lions Club held their 19th annual Freistatt Truck and Tractor Pull at the Erntefest grounds on Friday, Sept. 8, and Saturday, Sept. 9. About 1,700 people attended the event, which serves as an annual fundraiser for the Freistatt Fire Department.

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association released the names of the 2022-23 All American Softball Scholar Athletes and nine of them were from the Mt. Vernon High School softball team. All nine achieved a 3.5 or higher unweighted GPA.

Congregants made way to the 73rd annual Miller Fall Festival last weekend for the town’s biggest draw. The three-day affair, Thursday, Aug. 24-26, offered carnival rides, live music at the bandstand, craft booths and a parade, among other spectacles.

The Freistatt Lions Club held their 49th annual Erntefest on Saturday, Aug. 19. The event included traditional music, children’s games and activities, a Bingo game, authentic German food, a Chicken Dance competition and both German polka music and country/rock music.

A fiery crash on Wednesday night left a Springfield man dead and two other Springfield residents seriously injured. On Wednesday, Aug. 16, at 10:48 p.m., officers responded to a multi-vehicle accident on I-44 near Halltown.

What was an apartment building decades ago in the city of Mt. Vernon is now set to be destroyed soon. The apartment, located on Main Street across the street from Spirit of '76 Park, is long past its glory days, being built before the 1960's and no longer housing any patrons.
