By Michael L. Misfeldt
The Mt. Vernon High School baseball team played three games last week, losing twice but winning the final game of the week.
On Thursday, April 17, the Mt’neers traveled to Seneca to take on the Indians and came home with an impressive 4-2 win.
Brayden Jameson and Hudson Gaddy had two hits in the game, Aaden Tennison added two hits and two RBI’s and Gavin Johnston and Jaxen Evans both had an RBI in the win. Jackson Hood was the winning pitcher, going six and one-third innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts.
“We went into this game the underdogs for sure, against a 10-2 Seneca team,” said Mt. Vernon head coach Kyler Shoff. “Hood threw an incredible game for us on the mound and our batters backed him up when we were at the plate totaling nine hits on the day. Super proud of the way our guys played.”
On Thursday, April 15, Mt. Vernon hosted Nevada but lost to the Tigers, 9-1.
Tennison was 1-3 with an RBI, Braden Dodson went 3-4 in the game. Dodson was also the starting pitcher and threw four and two-thirds of an inning, allowing four runs, three earned on six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.
The Mt’neers started the week by traveling to Class 6, eighth ranked Neosho and fell to the Wildcats, 11-1.
Neosho jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and then added another run in the bottom of the third inning to increase that lead to 5-0. Mt. Vernon scored in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-1 but Neosho walked it off with a six-run bottom of the sixth inning.
Evans was 1-1 with an RBI and Johnston went 2-2 in the game.
“Neosho is a good baseball team, definitely our toughest competition this year,” said Shoff. “Makes sense that they are state ranked in Class 6. I thought our guys played a lot better than what the score showed.”
The Mt’neers are now 4-10 on the season and were scheduled to play against McDonald County tomorrow night before heading to Ash Grove on Friday night and Mountain Grove on Saturday.
